A couple of days in Jotunheimen
I just had a couple of days in the western part of Jotunheimen national park, Sognefjellet. The road was just open for easter and then it`s all easy access to some of the most scenic parts of Jotunheimen (IMO ;)) No tent this time, but a warm bed at Sognefjellshytta. The plan was to mix family matters with some landscape photography. It went quite smooth maybe with the exception of the pre planned dinners, which happened to be at the same time as sunset…. Well at least I didnt have to do some difficult decision making the last night as the sunset did not happen at all due to low clouds, heavy snow fall and no visibility.
The first night it was all blue and clear skies. No magic happened but the landscape and mountains were still a sight. The photos below are golden hour shots of Smørstabbtinane to the east and Skagadølstindane to the west. The moon photo is actually shot 1 minute away from the dinner table..
I was up 5.30 the next morning and the conditions looked promising with a lot of low clouds. I packed my gear and skied to a small peak just 15 minutes from the mountain cabin. I`m pretty happy with the next photo. I really like the light and the drama in the clouds. The light and colours in the snow were mostly reflections and there wasnt any direct sunlight that morning. Well you cant have it all.
After a quite short period of great light and colour the clouds turned into a heavy snow fall. The weather changes so fast in the mountains. Got a few snowy shots of a small cabin before it was time to head back for a early breakfast
That next day was great for photography all day really. Low clouds, snow fall, strong winds and short intervalls of light is as goog as it gets during day time…Normal people prefer blue skies and no wind..
Here is a timelapse, 80 photos stiched together in photoshop to make 13 seconds of timelape
As a mentioned there wasnt any more to see that night. All focused on easter activities inside the mountain cabin!
The next morning it was a all clear sky sunrise. Not what I hoped for, but it turned out to be something special anyway. This first photo is shot just outside the cabin. I had to catch that morning mist on the ground with the massive mountains in the background. It looks cold and yes it surely was, about minus 17 degrees.
The next thing was magic. First the mountains to the west before sunset and then with direct red sunlight
Some small scenes during golden hour
So a great experience and mix of staying comfy and having amazing nature at the doorstep. Did miss the tent a bit though…maybe the next time.
One last photo of my new Kase Revolution filter. I was planning to to a review for Kase on thi trip, but it wasnt really the time and place for filters. Nor do I got the right equipment for videos. PS, need advice for microphones in the field. But look out for something later. The filters look very promising so far and I used the ND8 all the time for video in daylight to keep the shutter speed at 50. The polarizer filter is also used on some of the sunrise photos above to achieve those saturated dark red tones.
See you later and have a nice weekend. Make sure to sign up for the newsletter and please visit my new youtube channel too
