Late winter in Sognefjellet and Hurrungane
Here are some photos from a trip I did in may to Sognefjellet and Hurrungane. The first few are from the drive across Sognefjellet. The mountains are a part of Smørstabbtindane and got some of Norways highest peaks. This area was also my campsite later in the evening and starting point for the hike the next day
Here is one classic frame from west looking back to Smørstabbtindan
Then I went to the western parts of Jotunheimen, Hurrungane. I hiked up the rigde called Dyrhaugsryggen towards Nordre Dyrhaugstind. The weather was very moody with low clounds and changing light. It was also the first time using my mountain skis on a longer hike. On the way there were some exellent views to Store Skagadølstind which is the third highest peak in Norway
My main goal of the hike was to get a view and some photos of Store Ringstind. I was almost on the top on Dyrhaugstinden before I went right and got to see this massive and beatiful sight of Store Ringsting, Austbotnting; Soleibotntind and more. The peak closest in the frame is Store Ringstind which many skiers hike all the way to the top..
Then I went downhill. It was quite very difficult conditions and icy in the lower parts. I had some scary moments on my back in some of the steepest part.s Well, except for some bruises, a soar back and a lost water bottle, I made it to live another day..;) I drove to the Sognefjellet just before the gates closed for the night and found a decent location for my tent. I managed to get it ready just before sunset.
I woke up in the middle of the night on a flat sleeping mat and did not sleep much after that. Anyway I was ready way before sunrise. And it was a amazing sight with the windy clouds and vibrant tones in the sky
I then headed to Krossbu and towards Veslbretindan. The rumour was that this spot had great views towards Smørstabbtindan and the mountains to the west. It was blue skies and very different conditions from the day before. So the photos got very contrasty and a bit boring. Guess I have to do another trip to this area one day. My plan to climb to the top of Smørstabbtind was also changed when I realised the scale and steep ridge to the top. The were some people that climbed the top and you can spot them in some of the photos. It looked quite impressive from where I stood. Maybe one day with better suited equipment and preparations.
